Ismaning near Munich, September 12, 2024. Hendrik Kramer (29) has been named Logistics Leader of the Year by the Logistics Hall of Fame jury. The award, presented by the Logistics Hall of Fame and donated by Hamburg-based STILL GmbH, recognizes his vision of “Human-Assisted Autonomy” in road freight transport and its successful implementation.

Kramer, CEO and co-founder of FERNRIDE, has established an innovative automation solution for the mobility of commercial vehicles on the market that allows trucks to be moved without a driver. FERNRIDE combines autonomous driving technology with human intelligence in a hybrid system known as “Human-Assisted Autonomy”. Like a control tower in aviation, remote operators monitor several vehicles simultaneously and can intervene if necessary.

The jury of the Logistics Hall of Fame, made up of 70 renowned personalities from business, science, politics and the media from 13 nations, explained their decision: “Hendrik Kramer's entrepreneurial spirit has created the basis for a safe entry into autonomous, electric driving. His initiative contributes to the energy transition and helps to increase the profit margins of logistics companies, alleviate the global driver shortage and improve the safety of employees in logistics, while supporting the logistics industry in its transformation to future-proof operations and processes,” summarizes Anita Würmser, Executive Jury Chairwoman of the Logistics Hall of Fame. Another decisive factor for the jury's vote was that the approach has the potential to fundamentally improve the value of the driving profession.

In order to realize his vision, Kramer started by launching scalable automation solutions for trucks in yard and port logistics that do not require a legal change. The tractor units drive 80 to 90 percent autonomously and are monitored by a remote operator at a monitor workstation modeled like a vehicle cockpit. Cameras and sensors on the vehicles record the surroundings and the data is transmitted to the vehicle to carry out the driving tasks autonomously. At the same time, the data is transmitted via the mobile phone network to the operators, who can support the vehicles remotely.

For legal reasons, this technology, which is based on over ten years of scientific research, is currently only used in closed areas such as logistics centers, factory premises and port areas to handle containers, move swap bodies or transport goods in warehouses. It has been successfully implemented in partnership with companies like Volkswagen, HHLA, and DB Schenker, which collectively operate over 1,000 yard trucks in Europe.

Over the next five years, Kramer plans to bring Human-Assisted Autonomy to public roads with additional vehicle types. FERNRIDE does not produce the vehicles itself, but works with strategic partners.

Since its foundation, FERNRIDE has achieved remarkable successes, including the raising of a total of 60 million dollars from private and public investors such as Bayern Kapital and the German government's DeepTech & Climate Fund (DTCF).

FERNRIDE was founded in 2019 and now employs over 150 people. The company is set to be listed on the stock exchange by the end of the decade.
