Michael ten Hompel: logistics research guru
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael ten Hompel is one of the leading researchers in the field of logistics and is highly respected the world over. The Fraunhofer researcher is considered the inventor of shuttle technology in intralogistics; he defined the content focus for the work of Europe's leading logistics research cluster, the "EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr", and put this focus into practice. He is also the pioneer of the Internet of Things in Germany. Michael ten Hompel can claim to have raised the societal status of logistics to a new level. He was inducted into the Logistics Hall of Fame in 2012 for his commitment and efforts in the service of logistics.

Merits
- Prof. Dr. Michael ten Hompel is one of the leading researchers in the logistics field and enjoys an international reputation. Numerous innovations can be directly attributed to his research.
- The Fraunhofer Professor and holder of a PhD in Electrical Engineering is seen as the inventor of shuttle technology in intralogistics, which he developed further into cellular conveying technology by transferring "swarm intelligence" to the field of intralogistics.
- ten Hompel is also a pioneer of the Internet of Things in Germany. He achieved a veritable quantum leap with the "EffizienzCluster LogistikRuhr", creating the biggest European research project in the logistics field: 120 companies and eleven research institutions are working together for the first time on handling the logistics of tomorrow's world using 75 percent of the resources used today. Although all the experts said at the time that the project was doomed to fail, it has achieved unrivalled success by winning the "Leading-Edge Cluster Competition" of the German government and is meanwhile considered to be the largest logistics research project anywhere in Europe.
- ten Hompel also set benchmarks in the area of training and basic scientific research. He built up the biggest basic research centre for logistics with six endowment chairs. The Logistics Campus is an interdisciplinary research centre at the TU Dortmund University of Technology and is run in cooperation with the Fraunhofer IML. It is already being called "Germany's best address for logistics researchers and an internationally visible symbol of interdisciplinary basic research and teaching" (NRW Science Minister Svenja Schulze). The Logistics Campus will further enhance the international status of Germany as a location for logistics research.
- The main research fields of the future researcher include information technology using cloud computing, green logistics, sustainability concepts, warehouse management and intralogistics.
